Call it phablet, phonelet, tweener or super smartphone, but the clunky mobile phone – closer in size to a tablet than the smartphone of a couple of years back – is here to stay. A surprise hit of 2012, it is drawing in more users, more handset makers and is shaping the way we consume content. Continue reading …
There is no doubt that WordPress is a popular solution that many of you are using to manage your blogs and websites. I’m using it right now as I write this post in fact. What many are unaware of is that with the latest “responsive” movement you can build custom WordPress mobile websites, so you can manage one site in one spot. Regardless of the device that someone uses to visit your website, they will be greeted by an experience that is optimized for their viewing/reading pleasure. Continue reading …
You do not want to talk to me on the phone. How do I know? Because I don’t want to talk to you on the phone. Nothing personal, I just can’t stand the thing. I find it intrusive and somehow presumptuous. It sounds off insolently whenever it chooses and expects me to drop whatever I’m doing and, well, engage. With others! When I absolutely must, I take the call, but I don’t do a very good job of concealing my displeasure. A close family member once offered his opinion that I exhibit the phone manners of a goat, then promptly withdrew the charge — out of fairness to goats. Continue reading …
Research In Motion Ltd.’s stock fell to a nine-year low Friday, a day after the Canadian company said phones running its upcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system won’t be available until after the holiday shopping season. Sales of the once-pioneering BlackBerry phones, which now look ancient next to the latest iPhones and Android devices, fell 41 percent in the latest quarter and likely won’t pick up again until new phones come out. By then, it might be too late. Continue reading …

Oh how we all love buzz words. There is social media and smartphones, tweet and ping, pounds and daps, wap and responsive… the list goes on and on. About that last one though, most people hear “WAP” and wonder if you have some kind of problem talking or if you are saying a real word. The answer is yes, well, sort of- not really a word but an acronym nonetheless and one that does indeed mean something to anyone who owns a smartphone. Continue reading …
There’s a lot to be said about this mobile movement… I saw a commercial tonight for a device made by Samsung that is the hybrid of a tablet and a smartphone. Pretty interesting that the manufacturers of these devices are literally figuring things out on the fly and the rest of us are doing the same. Continue reading …

The fact that people can walk down the street these days and jump around on the web in the palm of their hand is great for companies like KnockMedia. Going into 2012, there is a tremendous push for businesses to be WAP compatible. WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol, and simply put this is the technology that allows a website to be accessible on your handheld devices, aka smartphones. A WAP-enabled internet browser can provide all of the services that a desktop or laptop-based computer browser can provide, but it’s simplified or “stripped down” to accommodate the restrictions that mobile devices have such as smaller screen and bandwidth. Continue reading …
The competition for payment processing services, especially mobile payments, is heating up. Last week Google kicked it up a notch by announcing that it’s phasing out Google Checkout in favor of the new Google Wallet. This service supports in-store tap-to-pay payments from your phone via near field communications technology, as well as purchases on the web. Continue reading …
Everyone wants their own mobile application. In the last year, I have heard this consistently. In fact, mobile analytics firm Distimo claims 91 of the top 100 brands have their own mobile app (up from 51 just 18 months ago). On the surface this sounds great, right? I can use my big brand name to get people to install my application, and then I can market to them via the palm of their hand whenever I want. If you’re a big brand, I have no doubt you will get a ton of downloads. But downloads are a vanity metric; they don’t measure success. Continue reading …
As we enter the final months of 2011, the thoughts of tech watchers like me are turning to what we can expect in 2012. Voice recognition in all our devices? Touch control replacing the mouse and keyboard? The death of the wallet as mobile payments become mainstream? Maybe. But what I’m most excited about is something far more audacious: flexible screens. Continue reading …
If you are considering a mobile presence for your business, chances are you’ve heard the buzzwords “native app” or “wap website”. Often there is confusion about what each of these terms means and what they should be used for. So let’s break it down, app versus wap. Continue reading …
The phrase “there’s an app for that” has been taken to a whole new level this week… Thats right, if you want to learn about whats going on with the Michael Jackson murder trial, why turn on the news, or go to a news site, or read a paper?? Why would you do that when, wait for it, there’s an app for that. This is truly iPhone app development at its best. If I had a dollar for every time someone told me “Facebook is just not for me” or “I can’t get into LinkedIn, that won’t do me any good”… well, let’s just say that I’d have a lot of dollars. It’s hard to believe that with 100’s of millions of registered users, some people are still against the idea of using a social networking site like Facebook to further their cause. The fact of the matter is that in 2011, social media is where it’s at. You simply cannot afford to not give this medium your attention. These networks can provide you with a unique venue for creating a buzz around what you are doing, regardless of industry and regardless of offering. The sheer volume of people that head to these sites on a daily basis tells us something… if you’ve got something to say, it’s time to take your message to where the masses are! Continue reading …
Ever wonder what’s the real difference between Android and iPhone users? According to Hunch, Android users are 10 percent more likely to be men, skew younger, and 20 percent more likely to be politically conservative. As you can see from the infographic below, they have good incomes, but iPhone users tend to have higher household incomes. Android users are also “slightly more likely to be pessimists,” introverts, and are 29 percent more likely to want to save their money. Continue reading …
