It’s no surprise that marketers around the U.S. are struggling to captivate the attention of today’s millennial market. As a 26-year-old millennial, I am here to demystify my generation by giving you a few tips and tricks to infiltrate our market.

Social Change Movement
As a millennial, I grew up during a huge social change movement. A movement that sought out to be all inclusive, open minded and globally conscience. We have seen a society that has grown more caring, loving and accepting. This new movement has spawned a generation that actively participates in nonprofits, fundraising, volunteering and making a difference in the lives of others. With all of this social change comes a shift in social thinking, so what is important to millennials? The answer is – To be apart of something. So choose a cause to focus on (hunger, disease, education, climate) and be a part of that community, raise awareness and contribute.

Digital Media and Online Presence
Most of us are connected to the internet and use it to acquire information about all aspects of life. With the rise in internet use comes the rise of digital media. Strong digital presence has the ability to catch the mind of the millennials since they spend an average of 25 hours per week online. For companies looking to engage with millennials online, here are a few things to consider doing:

-Tell a personal story, take your readers on a journey.
-Create technical blogs that show you are an expert in your field.
-Have an open forum where users can ask questions or discuss products, events, and any other relevant topics.
-Create relationships and trust by being interactive online through social media, blogs and texting apps.
-Be genuine, relax your writing structure and insert your personality into everything you post.

Consider a Product Video
It’s no secret that millennials have a short attention span, it’s not our fault we just grew up multitasking! We live in a world where it’s so easy to hop from one thing to the next that information often gets lost. Having a product video will help slow us down and draw attention to the key aspects of your product. Incorporate bright colors and a genuine personality, outline the key takeaways and show us how to use the product. Keep the video short, simple and sweet. After you integrate the product video, you will find your brand awareness will increase dramatically.

Don’t Sell a Product Sell a Vision
Long gone are the days of traditional selling, while many techniques are still in practice they are slowly dying out. The reason for this is because the aggressive, pushy salesy techniques turn us off. We grew up on advertising and have no problem recognizing who wants money and who is genuine. We’re smart shoppers we need a brand that does more than sell. We want to see more companies become sustainable, ethical and helpful. We crave more than just products that do this and that, we want to know our money is not going to wrong people. This is especially important for people who don’t think millennials have brand loyalty- we do, we are just picky! With millennials holding one third of the buying power in America, it’s time to rethink these methods and try something new!
