Personal development is an ongoing process that can benefit you in so many ways. It can help you better understand yourself, your job, your goals and give you a roadmap to accomplishing them. We all know someone who has spent thousands of dollars on personal development, mentors, life coaches, and events. It almost gives personal development a bad rap because, let’s be honest, no one wants to spend thousands of dollars on something they’re not even sure will work for them. So before you start spending money on personal development ask yourself a few questions to make sure you’re choosing the path that is right for you.

First

Do your research! The internet is a wonderful place especially when you are looking for personal development. There are tons of free resources out there that can help you decide which life coach or mentor is right for you. Check out different mentors and life coaches, see if their teaching style aligns with your learning style, and see if their words can motivate you. Look for testimonials from current and past clients and take your time during this process because you want to find someone that works best for you. Pick someone whose message aligns with your core values this way when you listen to them it’s inspiring and uplifting. Always remember to try before you buy. In the end, if you pick the right person you will notice how naturally you begin to influence other people because you are influenced yourself!

Second

Be open to new experiences, have the right state of mind and challenge yourself to change. When beginning professional development, it is important that you are ready and willing to learn and implement new techniques. Someone who is not open to change or thinks they are doing well without help will not be receptive to the techniques that will help them learn and grow. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned on my personal development journey is you have to utilize the information and implement techniques given to you by the mentor or life coach because you won’t get anything out of just sitting in the audience.

Third

Repeat, repeat, repeat! Perhaps the most important stage of personal development is repeating the techniques given to you by the mentor or life coach. Remember when you were little reciting the A B C’s, and you thought that L, M, N, O, P was one word and not five letters. After repeating the alphabet enough and comparing it to the written version you eventually realize that it was, in fact, L, M, N, O, P. If only we could all go back to when we were young and we didn’t care about trying and failing until we succeeded. Don’t be afraid to fail just keep repeating it until you get it right. Like everything worthwhile in life, learning takes time and persistence.

Final Thoughts

If you’re truly interested in personal development, it can be a great start to an enormous positive change in your life. Learning new things can open the door to new opportunities in your personal and professional life or guide you to a more successful state of mind. However, like with anything, it will take a lot of work, trial and error and commitment. Anyone can benefit from personal development if the person is ready and willing to change. People who are reluctant to change will find it very difficult to see the value in having a life coach or mentor.
