When you are thinking about search engine marketing you need to give some thought to the keywords that you are going to optimize your website for. There is a considerable amount of value in coming up with a game plan before you start putting pen to paper. Google offers a free tool called the Google keyword tool that is helpful in figuring out what keywords to target. There are a number of other free and subscription based tools out there we suggest starting with Google’s, if you start gaining some momentum with your SEO and find that you need more data there are a couple of other ones like keyword discovery that would be worth your while.

So once you are in front of a keyword tool you need to start doing some brainstorming. Nothing wrong with doing some white-boarding with this. Give some thought to what you think you audience would be typing into a search when they are looking for what you provide. The tool will help expose you to variations of those terms that you brain-stormed, or better yet may introduce you to new terms that may be worth your while.

Remember, quantity is not always better than quality. If you see the plural version of a term is being searched for 10x more than the singular version, there is a good chance that there is major competition for that term… you may need to put in a huge effort in order to get competitive for those terms, and there is always a chance that even with a huge effort you still wont get ranked. Our suggestion, find a niche. When you are finding keywords for your content optimization work use modifiers to your advantage. Think about the competition and variation in results for a term like “car”. Now think about how you can narrow down that search by adding just one modifier like “red car”. Now go the extra mile and use multiple modifiers like “convertible red car” or “red car hatchback”. When you can find a niche you can narrow down the competition, and get to your target audience quicker.
