Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a popular buzz word there is no doubt about it. But do you really know what it is? Do you really know what someone is doing when they are optimizing your website?

The expectation is that when you create a new website, you will post it on your new web address and people will flock to it, it will create many new clients and new revenue streams, everyone will be happy, everyone will go to presidents club and everyone will makes lots and lots of money off it. Reality is, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, designing and building a good looking website is only half the battle, if that. You could have the greatest design, it can be elegant and appealing to the eye, it can have meticulously researched content and plenty of bells and whistles – but if no one knows that it is there what good is it to you?

Search Engine Optimization is the process of getting your website ranked for certain keywords and keyword phrases. The “power of the search” if you will. An example of this… we are offer website design services and we are located in Connecticut. One would think that we would want to appear on the results pages for Google, YAHOO! and Bing when a person does a search for “CT Web Design Company“, and other variations of this term. It’s pretty simple really, you just need to apply this idea to your business model. You sell pools in San Diego, then you would need to optimize your website so that terms like “San Diego pool company” are in your content. Over time, if your pages are properly optimized (that means don’t just stuff these terms in every nook and cranny of your page, that is keyword stuffing and you won’t get anywhere with Google doing that), you will start getting ranked on search engines for these terms. With these rankings, targeted traffic will begin finding your website, and if it is a nice website that is welcoming and able to sell your product or service, your phone or email inbox will start getting more action etc, etc. Simple process, right?

There are a lot of people/firms that claim to know SEO, but they really don’t. Anyone who guarantees #1 organic rankings across the board for your keywords is simply lying (organic just means that you are not paying for placement on the top or right hand side of the page). You can get ranked highly for your keywords, but it takes a some knowledge about how the search engines work.

The truth of the matter is that SEO really does work. Knockmedia and several of our larger clients are excellent case studies… to be analyzed and reproduced. Examples of how successful SEO changed the way a business operates on a daily basis… its some pretty powerful stuff no doubt. Along the way, we have developed my own signature social distribution methodology that leverages search engines and social media to help create a buzz around a companies offerings.
